52,000 devices were stolen last year in London alone. [MET Police] Device-snatching street crime has only continued to rise in the UK, increasing to 50% in some boroughs.
This guide was created following a personal distressing experience. My iPhone was stolen — snatched right out of my hands from behind as I was texting at night in Burgees Park, London. The thief ran off so quickly that, even with my bike, I could not catch up.
It was both violating and frustrating. Beyond the cost of replacing the phone, it was unsettling to have my personal space invaded. Replacing and setting up a new phone was also an unexpected drain on time and energy.
I wanted to turn that frustration into something useful.
When I shared my story on Instagram, friends reached out with their own similar experiences in London, highlighting just how widespread phone theft has become.
This guide is designed to be a practical resource for safeguarding your phone. It’s also meant to be a shared space to learn from others’ experiences.
